Motorola announced the Signature 27, a flagship built around a 6.8-inch tandem OLED rated at up to 12,000 nits and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. It also carries a dedicated sensor just for motion, which Motorola calls a first on a phone.
The OLED screen on it combines two light-emitting layers into one (hence, tandem), and Motorola claims up to 34% better energy efficiency and up to a 121% longer lifespan than traditional AMOLED panels. They say it’s the brightest display ever on a phone, but that claim only covers phones the really pricey, high-end models in the US and Canada. The 12,000-nit peak is Motorola’s own lab figure, measured at a 1% average pixel level.
The Motorola Signature 27 has an event vision sensor (EVS) that detects changes in light at the pixel level and records motion separately from its main cameras. A feature called Action Shot uses it to freeze fast subjects while keeping in as much light as it can.
That sensor sits beside a dedicated 50MP Sony LYTIA L910 main camera, a 200MP 3x periscope cam, and a 50MP ultrawide. With generative AI, it is able to reach up to 100x zoom and sharpen captured images. In DXOMARK’s tests, it scored 173, second in global rankings, but it’s said that image quality at longer zoom distances doesn’t match competing phones with dedicated long-range telephoto modules.
The Signature 27 is also Motorola’s first phone to support GrapheneOS, the hardened, open-source system based on Android OS, and Motorola worked with the GrapheneOS Foundation on it. Motorola promises seven OS upgrades and up to seven years of security updates.
Gemini Intelligence features, including Rambler dictation, Create My Widget and Sign-to-Text for American Sign Language, are set to reach the phone as Google rolls them out in the coming months.
The built-in 7,000mAh battery is 35% larger than the last generation’s. Motorola says 90W charging gives you up to 12 hours of battery life from a 12-minute charge, and wireless charging runs at up to 50W.
