The 14-inch MacBook Pro moves to the M6, with a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, Apple announced. It also gets Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 from Apple’s own N1 wireless chip, and every model starts with 1TB of storage. It’s the M6 update to the entry-level model that was expected around Apple’s “Pro and tell” event.
The CPU splits into two super cores, four performance cores and six efficiency cores. That’s two more CPU cores and two more GPU cores than the Apple M5, and Apple says graphics run up to 30% faster and AI workloads up to 25% faster.
Each of the 12 GPU cores has its own Neural Accelerator, working alongside what Apple calls a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says that engine is up to 1.9x faster than the M5’s, and it pitches the laptop for running large language models (LLMs) locally.
The 16GB base model gets less memory bandwidth than the others: 153GB/s, against 170GB/s with 24GB or 32GB. Apple’s announcement only gives the “up to” figure. If local AI is why you’re buying, we’d skip the 16GB model.
Apple’s fast charging, up to 50% in 30 minutes, needs a 96W or higher adapter. The M6 model comes with a 70W one, so that’s an extra purchase. Apple rates the battery at up to 24 hours of video streaming.
