Gemini on Android Auto can now answer from your Gmail, Calendar and Photos. Google announces it’s rolling out Personal Intelligence on Android Auto now, and to cars with Google built-in in the coming months.
With your permission, Personal Intelligence connects the Google apps you already use: Workspace (Gmail and Calendar included), Photos, Maps, YouTube and Search. It can pull one detail from an email, a photo or a place you saved in Maps, or reason across several of them for one answer.
Gemini can get your flight gate and check whether the flight is on time in one request, with no digging for the confirmation email. “Take me to my doctor’s appointment” works without the address, and it can find a car wash from a photo you took last week and navigate there.
Your apps stay unconnected until you turn Personal Intelligence on, and you can switch it off anytime in Gemini’s settings. If it’s already on in your Gemini app, it comes along into the car. Cars with Google built-in share personal answers only when your phone is connected.
Google’s help page for connected apps says the company doesn’t train its AI models directly on your Gmail inbox or Calendar. With Keep Activity on, though, it trains them on summaries, excerpts and inferences from the emails and files Gemini uses to answer you. For a short or especially relevant email, that summary may just be the email itself.
Google also has people review a subset of connected-app data, and it asks you not to connect apps with personal or confidential information you wouldn’t want used for training.
Personal Intelligence is for personal Google accounts of people 18 and older, not Workspace business, enterprise or education accounts. It’s rolling out globally except in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the UK and Nigeria.
We’d still leave for the airport early, though.
