Apple Home Collection: LG cameras and a lock that opens as you walk up

Apple calls Home Collection its first lineup of smart home cameras, thermostats and a lock. Designed with LG and Schneider, each sets up with one iPhone tap.

Apple has announced Apple Home Collection, smart home cameras, a door lock, thermostats and sensors designed with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric. Apple calls it its first lineup of smart home cameras, thermostats and a lock, and the standout is an LG lock that opens as you walk up.

Each accessory sets up with a single iPhone tap and runs from the Home app, with no extra app or account. The product names aren’t Apple’s, though: it’s the LG Smart Deadbolt Lock and the Schneider Home Smart Thermostat.

The lock that opens as you walk up

The LG Smart Deadbolt Lock seems quite clever. It uses Ultra Wideband, the technology that gives Apple devices spatial awareness, to tell how close you are and whether you’re walking toward the door. Carry a home key on a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch, and the door unlocks as you reach it, with no tapping needed.

The lock also senses if the door has been opened, closed or tampered with, and warns you if it’s open even while locked.

It supports Matter, the industry standard that lets smart home devices from different brands work together, and Aliro, a standard for unlocking doors with phones and watches whoever made the lock. It works entirely locally, so the core lock functions keep going when your internet doesn’t.

Add the doorbell, and you can see who’s ringing, talk to them and let them in from one screen.

Cameras that use your iCloud+ plan

All four cameras are LG’s. Each records up to 2.5K video and recognizes people, familiar faces, pets, vehicles and packages. The Video Doorbell Wired adds a second, full HD camera pointing down at packages.

The Indoor Cam fully embodies a smart cam. It tilts up to look around when you check in on the house, then tilts back down to stop monitoring as soon as the first member of the household gets home. A camera that physically looks away when you’re home is a privacy feature you can check from across the room.

Video history goes into iCloud+, which keeps 10 days of events. Apple says that means no separate camera subscription, which is true as far as it goes: the subscription you need is the iCloud+ plan you pay Apple for. The 50GB plan covers one camera, the 200GB plan up to five, and the 2TB plan unlimited cameras.

On eligible iCloud+ plans, Apple Intelligence describes what happens in a clip and lets you search footage in plain language. Footage is end-to-end encrypted, so LG, Schneider and Apple can’t see it. The cameras work through a home hub, such as Apple HomeView, a HomePod or an Apple TV 4K.

Thermostats, sensors and setup

There are two thermostats, one from LG and one from Schneider. Adaptive Temperature in the Home app uses your iPhone to tell whether someone’s home, winding down for the night or away, and adjusts the temperature without a schedule.

In the contiguous US, Clean Energy Guidance can shift heating and cooling to cleaner, cheaper hours if your utility plan supports it. The thermostats can also read room sensors from LG and Schneider, or the ones built into HomeView and HomePods.

Every device in the collection supports Thread, a low-power network in which smart home devices talk to each other directly and route around a failure. That keeps them connected if your Wi-Fi drops. Change your home Wi-Fi and they update their network settings themselves, which kills a classic smart home chore.

In the US, Apple Retail also offers professional installation from ADT for an extra charge, starting this fall.

This is the first time that Apple is selling a lock and cameras of its own, more than a decade after it first launched HomeKit. LG and Schneider helped bring them all to life, sure, but if they’re anything like Apple’s other successful products, we might just see a lot of “it just works” in their wake.

Correction, October 14th: We removed a line saying HomeKit is integral to the Home Collection’s performance. Apple doesn’t say that.
