Nothing’s Android 17 update is out of beta. Nothing OS 5.0 is now rolling out to the Nothing Phone (3), Nothing says on its community forum, and the rest of the lineup follows through mid-January.
To get it, go to Settings, then System, then System update. The rollout is staggered, so it may not show up for you right away, depending on your region.
The biggest change is on the home screen. A new Translucent theme gives widgets and the search bar a frosted-glass look and tints app icons to match your wallpaper, so change the wallpaper and the colors follow. It sits alongside the classic Nothing look rather than replacing it, so you pick.
The lock screen gets two new clock faces. Micrographics, styled after the graphics on Nothing’s hardware, puts the date, time, weather and your next meeting on one face; Gooey goes for fluid, playful shapes. Both can take their color from your wallpaper.
Two everyday changes may matter more. You can split notifications and Quick Settings into separate panels: swipe down from the left for notifications, from the right for Quick Settings. And Bluetooth in Quick Settings now connects or disconnects your earbuds or speaker with one tap, without a trip to the Bluetooth settings page.
Supported animations now follow your finger. Start opening an app or folder, change your mind and swipe back, and the animation reverses midway instead of finishing first. Nothing also says smarter background management keeps the apps you use often ready, with fewer reloads.
The smaller touches are the clever ones. When the camera spots a QR code, the result stays pinned in place instead of sliding around with the code, so you have something steady to tap. A new Glyph Timer widget starts a countdown from the home screen, and the Glyph on the back of the phone shows the time left, so you don’t have to keep waking the screen.
The status bar adds a three-color indicator that tells you what the phone is doing: green for sensitive access, blue for location sharing and yellow for AI processing. Essential Voice, Nothing’s speech-to-text tool, now shows your words as you speak and is better at turning a spoken run of items into a list.
Nothing’s release roadmap sets out when every other phone gets the general release (Nothing’s name for the non-beta build):
- Early November: Phone (4a) Pro, Phone (4a), Phone (3a) Pro and Phone (3a)
- Mid-November: Phone (2a) and Phone (2a) Plus
- Late December: Phone (3a) Lite
- Mid-January: Phone (4b) and CMF Phone 2 Pro
Nothing calls those timings “indicative and subject to change,” and rollouts are phased by region and carrier. The same roadmap penciled in the Phone (3) for mid-October, and it arrived on October 12th, so the first date on the list held.
The Phone (4b) runs late because its Android 17 development cycle “started later,” Nothing says, and it needs extra integration, testing and certification work. Its open beta isn’t expected until mid-December. The Phone (3a) Lite and CMF Phone 2 Pro skip the open beta and go straight to the general release.
Then there’s the fine print. The Phone (1), Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1 “have reached the end of major software support and will not receive Nothing OS 5.0,” the roadmap says. If you’re still on a Phone (2), Nothing OS 4.1 is where the big updates stop.
Phone (3) owners, go check for it. Phone (2) owners, it may be time to start shopping.
