Xbox may have something to stream when Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) launches next month, but it won’t be an exclusive, and it won’t reach your PC. According to a report on The Verge, Xbox had secured exclusive rights to stream the game through Xbox Cloud Gaming at launch. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma herself reportedly told employees at an all-hands meeting that Microsoft is getting ready to do something around GTA 6 that “no other platform holder is doing,” and that she meant a streaming deal.
Then Matthew Ball, Xbox’s chief strategy officer, posted on X:
While the excitement for GTAVI and XBOX is great to see, it has also led to some misreporting. We are looking forward to launching GTAVI on XBOX November 19, though the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC.
The original report about this matter has since been corrected, saying the deal “isn’t exclusive” and that GTA 6 “won’t be streamed to PCs.”
All of this matters because GTA 6 is coming out only on gaming consoles upon release. However, Xbox the gaming platform is also available on Windows PCs, so that can cause some confusion.
Ball’s post is careful in a way that tells you something, though: it says what Xbox won’t do, not what it will. Sharma’s “no other platform holder” line still needs explaining, and streaming GTA 6 to an Xbox that can already run it is a much smaller thing than putting it on every Windows laptop on day one. We’d hold the excitement until Microsoft or Rockstar puts an actual deal on the record.
